What is Hail, Columbia? It was considered one of the United States’ first unofficial national anthems. The music was composed by Philip Phile in 1789 for George Washington’s first inauguration, according to Wikipedia. It was titled “The President’s March,” and it became the song “Hail, Columbia” when arranged with lyrics by Joseph Hopkinson in 1798.
